The best way to become successful is simply to follow in successful people’s footsteps. This is true with pretty much anything. Ask any successful person what they owe their success to and most of the time they’ll always mention someone they follow or look up to. That’s just how people learn.
Well with hip hop it’s no different. I’ve heard rappers call out a bunch of other rappers who inspired them or motivated them. You probably already have your list of rappers who you hope you’ll be like someday. In this post I’ll list some of the things rappers have said to help you out and hopefully motivate you. Hope this rapper advice helps. I took this advice from interviews done with these rappers. If you want the sources for this information just ask me on the comments.
Advice From Eminem
On Rhyming: Eminem says you have to figure out the science to breaking down words and once you do this, you can pretty much make anything rhyme.
Other Advice: Eminem used to read the dictionary just to add vocabulary ammo to his brain. He’s also constantly writing to maintain his ideas.
Quote: “LL [Cool J] was actually like- like hearing him rap actually made me want to rap… Yeah, man. That was what did it for me. I think when the Beastie Boys came out, then I kinda felt like ‘Oh, it’s possible!”
Advice From Jay-Z
On Rhyming: Jay says rap is poetry and that rap is about diversity. He’s basically telling you to be unique. That’s what will separate you from the pack and get you to the top.
Other Advice: He says talent is god given and when you’re ready to unleash that talent your mind let’s it go but you must have the belief that when you draw from the wealth of your talent that it will be there.
Quote: “Don’t make decisions based on the fear.”
Advice From 2Pac
On Rhyming: Pac says as long as you rap from the heart and about things you lived through your rhymes will form them selves.
Other Advice: Pac says you have to do more than what the average man does. You have to take it a step further and once you reach that mark, you made it, remember being original is extremely important.
Quote: “Reality is wrong. Dreams are for real.”
Advice From Nas
On Rhyming: Again Nas enforces the act of being original. (You should start noticing a pattern by now).
Other Advice: Nas says he doesn’t want to be the best, he’s happy being who he is and he realized that as he matured. In a way this is probably why he is so good.
Quote: “Don’t speak to fools, they scorn the wisdom of your words.”
Advice From Ice Cube
On Rhyming: Rap about truth and what you’re truly feeling.
Other Advice: He says stops looking for rappers to get a deal because YOU ARE the deal.
Quote: “I think the worst thing you can do about a situation is nothing.”
I hope this rapper advice helps you and puts your mind back in to the right state. I know advice is worth as much as you pay for it. It’s what you do with it that’s valuable. These are brief tips but they can be very helpful if you apply them the right way.
