How to Rap

how to rapThe first step to becoming a successful rapper is also the most obvious one and that is to learn how to rap. As obvious as this is, there’s a lot of “rappers” out there that get behind the mic with no talent what so ever. This is true and you see it everywhere including in mainstream music. The thing there is that I don’t consider that music real rap. If you want to be known as a real rapper then you’ll definitely need to know how to rap.

Some people are born into rap and are naturally good at it. Others might get into the genre a little later on and might not be as good. Whatever the case may be, if you put effort into it, you should be able to become a great rapper. Just like with most things, experience will play a big role on how successful you become as a rapper.

The Basics

Before you decide that you want to make rapping your career, make sure you’re vocabulary is up to par. If this is not the case for you then I suggest you open up a dictionary and look up new words that you might want to use as rhymes, a thesaurus will also come in handy. What you will be trying to do here is basically expanding your vocabulary. The more words you know the easier it will be for you to come up with rhymes.

Not only will rhymes come easier but I can assure you that your rap content will be better as well. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, as a rapper your weapons are your words so that means that the more words you’re familiar with the more weapons you will possess. Think about this, some of the best rappers dead or alive have a really colorful vocabulary. They use words in a way that average rappers won’t. This is again due to their expanded vocabulary. So if you want to learn how to rap, for starters read a dictionary and add new weapons to your arsenal.

How to Rap

No one can really tell you exactly how to rap. This is because almost every rapper will have a unique style that can’t be copied so easily. Rappers are usually known for their styles and often times this is what make a rapper famous. You should always take tips and notes from other rappers as this will make you better but you should also develop a unique style that will one day get you recognized.

With that said, there are still things and exercises that you can do to improve your rapping skills which will in turn help you develop a killer rapping style. As I mentioned before make sure that your vocabulary is up there. I can’t stress enough how important this is. Without a good vocabulary you’ll start recycling rhymes and soon all your raps will be lame and they will all sound the same. STAY AWAY from recycled rhymes. People are very good at catching these and as a new rapper, you don’t want to be accused of this.

Another thing that you can do is to listen to your favorite raps everyday. This is obvious but it’s really helpful if you listen the right way. Instead of just listening to the music, really pay attention to the way the rapper flows and the way he delivers rhymes. Try this, pick a song that you’re familiar with, now go online and look up the lyrics, now rap along to the song. This will loosen up your tongue and will help you learn to roll out words better.

Next, write down lyrics when ever you can and rap them out out in your head. Whenever you can, rap out loud to an instrumental of your choice. Don’t worry about how many times you mess up or how bad you sound. Try to develop a rhythm with your words and deliver rhymes that go to the beat. This is what you call flow, if you can flow then you know how to rap.

Other Things to Try

Aside from the things I mentioned above, there are other that you can try which will help you to learn how to rap. One of those is freestyling, I talk more about this topic in my freestyle rap post. Freestyling is a little more advanced but if you incorporate it in the beginning it can help you become a better rapper. This will get you thinking quick and will greatly improve your delivery on the mic.

Writing a list of rhymes is another thing you should try. Sit down and write a list of all the things that you can make rhyme. This will help you come up with rhymes quicker which will make writing songs a lot easier. All these things put together will help to improve your rapping skills. Remember, you should focus on developing your own unique style which you will be known for. Take tips from all of  your favorite rappers and incorporate what you like from them into your own raps.

Also, remember that rapping will be as difficult as you want to make it. While it’s true that some people are naturally good at rapping, almost anyone can become a good rapper if they give the effort that will be needed. Focus on the things I mentioned above and practice everyday. You will get as good as you believe you can. Learning how to rap is really a mind set, remember that.
