How to Have Mediocre Talent and Still be Successful

Today, in the music industry I think it’s safe to say that the cream does not always rise to the top. How many artists listed on Billboard’s top 100 really have talent? I’ll save you the effort, not many. But one thing that they do have that you don’t is success. They are in the forefront, getting their music heard by millions and making tons of money. How did they get there? By working hard and putting in an extreme amount of effort. You may be more talented but are you harder working?. You have to realize, if you haven’t already, talent doesn’t mean much anymore and it’s the people who put in the hours that make it to the top.

Talent accounts for about 10% of success (and 70% of statistics are made up on the spot). The other 90% has to do with your effort, your hustle, your stick-to-it-tiveness. Are you willing to sacrifice your days, nights and weekends for your dream? Are you willing to put in the effort it takes to build a fan base from scratch? Are you willing to learn the business so that you can put yourself in the position to get ahead? If you answered “No” to any of those questions, you need to quit now and save yourself some time.

To be successful in this business you have to work harder than anyone else. Mic Tyson used to get up at 3am to train for his next fight. Why? Because he knew that his opponents weren’t. Do you have that type of determination? Are you willing to be up working on your promotion strategies while other rappers are asleep?

Talent isn’t so important today because, with the internet, you can literally create ANYTHING and you’ll find someone in the world who will like and buy it. The real challenge for upcoming artist is finding their market. Having a market that you can relate to and is willing to listen, buy and support you is what you need to focus on to gain success at whatever level you’re at, talent wise.

This means you can be mediocre and still be successful by working harder than anyone else and finding your market. You don’t have to be the best lyrically, you just have to be the most hardworking and focused. Does that describe who you are today? If not, make it so and you’ll find success.
